Information About Janelle - Worcester Park teacher - (1 review)
This is how 3 referees rated Janelle:
I'm Janelle and I have been playing the violin since I was 7. Based in London, I currently study the violin with So Ock Kim, an eminent soloist who is also Professor of Violin at the Royal Academy of Music. I received a full music scholarship to join Wells Cathedral School (WCS) as a violin specialist at the age of 10. Being one of the four music specialist schools in the UK, the training I received was outstanding but it was Catherine Lord, my violin teacher there, who showed me what a teacher could really do. I made my solo concerto debut at the age of 16 with the Atheneum Kamerorkest under the baton of Arjan Tien, and a year later, won the school concerto competition and performed the Korngold Violin Concerto with the WCS Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Matthew Andrews. I am also pursuing a degree in Pharmacy at King's College London but music has always been a huge part of my life and I will be doing lots of playing and freelancing during my time in London.
On an international level, I was accepted at the age of 18 into the Pacific Music Festival 2015 in Sapporo, Japan. Being one of the 78 who were chosen from an international pool of 913 applicants from some of the world's top conservatoires, with an age range of 18-29, I felt incredibly privileged to have been given this opportunity. Highlights included working closely with Rainer Kuchl, the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic, and performing with incredibly distinguished conductors including Valery Gergiev and Jun Markl.
I also play the piano and love working with string chamber music groups and teaching aural/music theory. I am happy to coach in these areas too, please contact me with any questions.
My interest in teaching began when I was given the task of giving my 8-year-old cousin his very first piano lesson. It was a steep learning curve and an incredibly enjoyable experience for the both of us. Since then, I have mentored younger students during my time at Wells, both on a one-on-one basis and in sectional rehearsals which helped prepare us for orchestral concerts. Away from music, I tutored a 15-year-old girl in IGCSE Mathematics for a year and it taught me more about myself than I could have imagined. It was a real joy to see her grow from someone who would steal sidelong glances at me for approval to someone who tackled challenging questions with total focus and determination. Her teachers noticed the difference in her, not only as a maths student but also as a person. Given the right encouragement and support, I believe that any student can achieve anything in any field.
Music, in this day and age, can sometimes seem like a means to an end or merely an "arty" school subject, but it is an integral part of being a well-rounded human being. For me, it has been a source of confidence and passion, which I easily transferred to other aspects of my life. Everyone should have the opportunity to have fun with music, it was never designed to be a spectator sport and the rewards are immeasurable! I believe that a good technique is vital right from the start - it gives you all the tools you need to express the music freely. We all have our lazy days but perfecting the basics is crucial and there are no shortcuts; I know this firsthand! I look forward to sharing and making music with you.
