I studied oboe and piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London and did a degree in music at the University of Edinburgh.
As well as having extensive experience of teaching (privately and in schools), I enjoy playing chamber and orchestral music with musicians of all levels, from amateur to professional. I am a member of Dundee Symphony Orchestra, St Andrews Baroque Orchestra and St Andrews Community Orchestra and have been a guest player and soloist with various amateur orchestras in Scotland and Wales.
Before marrying and moving to Wales some time ago, I taught woodwind at Dundee High School and at various schools in Edinburgh, as well as oboe at St Leonards school in St Andrews. During my time in Wales and since returning to St Andrews, I have taught piano and oboe privately.
Many of my pupils have gained excellent results in the ABRSM exams, but I'm also happy to teach in an exam-free way if you would prefer it. While exams can sometimes be helpful, progress and enjoyment are not dependent on external accreditation. With children, particularly, I like to engage the imagination as it is often a more effective tool for learning than theoretical explanation.
For many, the greatest joy of music is in playing with others, so I encourage my pupils to play duets or in chamber groups or orchestras.
The Alexander Technique has been very helpful in my own playing and I bring an awareness of its teachings to my lessons. Physical aspects such as general posture, arm position etc have a major impact on fluency, tone, performance anxiety and many other aspects of music-making - and playing in a relaxed, effective way makes it all so much more enjoyable!
