Personal Description:

I started playing music young and never looked back! Starting on piano around 5 years old and clarinet around 7, I later began cello at around the age of 8. Saxophone followed at about age 12, and guitar at 15 or so.

I have been playing in string ensembles and orchestras since about 13, as principal cellist in various youth ensembles. Also, as principal sax in big bands and sextets, I toured Europe and played several prestigious venues including palaces and street festivals. Having achieved grade 8 clarinet with distinction and awards for composition, I took up a place at the Birmingham Conservatoire. During this time I wrote a trombone concerto and 2 symphonies as well as several chamber works, studying under the tutelage of John Mayer and Andrew Downes.

I left Birmingham after deciding to change from classical to contemporary music studies and enrolled as a guitarist at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford. Again, I left to pursue other musical projects but after a long hiatus I finally returned to ACM in 2013 to complete my BMus, and was awarded a 1st in October 2015.

In the interim I formed my band "Timshel", who played a number of major venues and festivals, produced 5 albums and signed to the Southampton label "Angry Badger Records".Since that disbanded in 2014 I have played with lots of different acts in lots of different styles- I played mandolin and piano with the Teapot Junkies, cello with Wise Children and Winters Hill, saxophone in Big Brother Soul, Maddison Heights, Ray Foster and The Soul Classics, and guitar with Mama Belle. My current live band is a jazz/funk quartet in which I play sax. I still play cello for string trios and quartets, and when time permits I also write and perform with my original hard rock band Bring The Revolution.

Those acts have given me some fantastic experiences- BBC radio live sessions, main stage at Wickham festival, exclusive black tie parties, Big Bike Bash main event, a pagan wedding- an amazing array of events! I've been lucky enough to open for some great acts too over the years- Ugly Kid Joe (my personal heroes!), Chuck Mosely (of Faith No More), Tax The Heat, The Wurzels, Focus, Wishbone Ash, Chaz and Dave, Steve Cropper, The Animals- again an amazing selection of musicians and fabulous venues!

I am also a working composer with several features films, short films, commercials and game credits to my name. This is my major preoccupation these days, alongside teaching and lecturing.

Tutoring Experience:

I have over 15 years of private teaching experience as well as 3 years experience of lecturing film composition at ACM at both the Guildford and Clapham campuses. In addition to this, I run a weekly big band for beginner to intermediate players and occasionally work as a supply teacher in both primary and secondary schools.

Since moving to Southampton I have been growing and developing a teaching practice and I have taught all the instruments listed in my offered subjects. Whatever style is required, be it classical, jazz, rock, blues, metal - I've played them all and love the lot!

Tutoring Approach:

I have a number of adult students as well as younger learners, currently ranging from the age of 8-75, so please don't feel nervous if you are a more mature person looking to learn. Whatever style you want, whatever pace you wish, I'm experienced in all ages and abilities, beginner to advanced. I don't just teach the grades and the notes, I teach how to perform. My lessons are fun and relaxed, and whether it's Mozart, Stravinsky, The Beatles, Deep Purple, John Coltrane, Madness or Metallica, I'm comfortable with whatever you throw my way!
