Personal Description:

Apart from being a violinist, I am also a professional ornithologist. My other interests include art, architecture, mycology, philosophy, hiking, poetry, travelling, spirituality.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught students, adults and children, for over 10 years (since my studies at the Royal College of Music) using various methods/grade systems, including ABRSM, Suzuki method, Trinity, etc. At the RCM, we received training in how to work with children, eg. how to hold the violin, bow, read music, etc… and I have taught children as young as 7 years old. Some of my students have received distinctions in their ABRSM exams and have seen their grades improve since acquiring me as a teacher.

Tutoring Approach:

My main priority is working to fit the needs of the student. I consider myself particularly suited to those with less confidence, who require patience and understanding. My other strength is very careful observation, ascertaining where there is room for improvement. I am equally at home working in great detail and preparing students for exams, concerts, etc. and working in a more relaxed manner. As well as technical instruction, I explore all aspects of musicianship and the philosophical side of music-making. I work using a systematic method of teaching violin technique and will pass on to all students, whether casual or expert, the techniques which were taught to me at the Royal College of Music. These basics will be understandable, achievable, useful and interesting to students at all levels.
