Information About James - New Milton teacher

Personal Description:

James is a freelance clarinettist playing with orchestras across the UK. James studied Physics at Imperial College, completed a PhD in Physics at Oxford University, and studied clarinet at the Royal College of Music. During his studies at the Royal College of Music, James was Principal Clarinet and Principal E-flat Clarinet of the RCM Symphony Orchestra, Principal Clarinet of the RCM Chamber Orchestra, and was Highly Commended in the RCM Concerto Competition, performing the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. He also played clarinet and E-flat clarinet with the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra in London, and performed the Mozart and Finzi clarinet concertos with orchestras in London and across the UK.

James has performed as an orchestral and chamber musician in many of the country’s leading concert halls including the Barbican, Festival Hall and the Purcell Room, as well as giving solo performances at the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall, and performances for BBC Radio 3. He has participated in masterclasses with many leading clarinettists including Jack Brymer, Gervase de Peyer and Andrew Marriner. James performs with orchestras across the UK, and has recorded at Abbey Road and Metropolis Studios in London.

Tutoring Experience:

James has been teaching the clarinet since 1992 and enjoys working with students of all ages and at all stages of development. His students vary from beginners all the way to ABRSM Diploma level and above

Tutoring Approach:

Lessons are tailored to the aims of each person, whether that be preparing for an exam, an audition, a specific performance, practicing orchestral repertoire, or just simply having fun progressing playing the clarinet.

An initial 30 minute trial lesson with James is always free. Further lessons can be either 30, 45 or 60 mins. Lessons can be at the students' home, at James' music studio at his home in Sway, or on-line via Skype or Zoom.

James has a Basic DBS check and has completed the Child Protection in Education (Music) Certificate offered by the Musicians Union. He also has Professional Indemnity Insurance.
