Personal Description:

I've been playing electric bass for over 15 years and upright bass for nearly 10 years. I've studied under some of the north east's finest bass players and have a degree majoring in performance, as well as studying composition, theoretical improvisation, production and many other facets of music.
Over the last 10 years I've played in rock, blues, soul and world music bands that have toured the U.K. and Europe playing to crowds of over 10,000 people. I've also played lots of jazz as a member of a trio and many other line-ups, including international jazz festival performances. I play and sing in blues bands, many function bands as well as doing theatre work and larger ensemble work.

Tutoring Experience:

I've been teaching electric bass, upright bass and guitar privately for over 10 years. As well as teaching in primary and secondary schools and music centres across the North East. I've also taught the adult bass classes at the Sage Gateshead. As I have had several tutors myself, I have learned a lot about teaching and each approach to it. Realising how I like to be taught and picking up tips on how others like to learn. I can focus on grades if the student wishes to do so or just identify areas to improve the overall abilities of the student. Finally, I pride myself on my abilities to teach all ages. I currently have a 6 year old guitar student and a 75 year electric bass student, with all ages in between.

Tutoring Approach:

Enjoyment and flexibility. These two principles are key to my approach. Music is supposed to be fun so I always keep this in mind when teaching. I want the student to enjoy the lesson as much as I always do.
Flexibility: This is important to me in many respects. It includes teaching time and location (wherever/whenever the student feels best), the genre of music the student wants to develop in, the outcome of each lesson and overall objective over a period of time, how hard each student wants to work and many other small but critical factors.
If the student wishes to travel to me, they will be taught in a well equipped home studio.
