Personal Description:

After studying at the RNCM I was the principal bass trombonist with the English Northern Philharmonia, the orchestra of Opera North, for 15 years. I have freelanced with orchestras, opera and ballet companies throughout the British Isles.
I continue to enjoy playing all styles of music from Big Band to Renaissance.
My published pieces are Three Moods for solo bass trombone and Bach two-part inventions arranged for two trombones (pub. Warwick Music).

Tutoring Experience:

For many years I have coached the lower brass section with the National Children's Orchestra. I give talks, demonstrations and masterclasses at schools and colleges and have been an external examiner for the RNCM and the City of Leeds College of Music.
For my work in schools on all brass instruments I teach students from beginner to Grade 8. My private students include local children; players studying for diploma, college auditions, job auditions and professional players seeking mentoring.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe lessons should be enjoyable while covering musicianship, technique and repertoire. I particularly find that students of all brass instruments need help to develop correct breathing techniques. This is the foundation of all other aspects of playing.
I ensure all my students are more than proficient at reading music and aspects of theory including scales. I recommend the most appropriate and enjoyable repertoire from a wide range of sources.
