Banjo (4 string)
I am a folk singer and instrumentalist. I play gigs around the Glasgow area and have performed in over 400 professional bookings.
I mainly play acoustic music and enjoy flat picking with the plectrum, a suitable style for a lot of folk and rock music. I am also lead singer in my band, where I play guitar, mandolin, banjo, whistle and harmonica.
I am a qualified teacher and used to provide guitar lessons in England where I lived until 2014. I worked as a guitar tutor for four years there. I have also been happy to teach the mandolin, which I use to play fiddle tunes.
Students like my work and find me easy to get on with. I like to balance your learning of music and how it works along with the kind of tunes you'd like to play. I usually follow a course using good textbooks, but we can move beyond that if you are interested in a certain direction. I mainly use tuition books from the Registry of Guitar tutors. For vocals, I follow the London College of Music syllabus, (New pop music course from 2017).
I encourage you to learn a bit about musical ideas such as pitch and note values and to become familiar with how musicians write down their tunes.
I am a live-microphone singer, which means I usually perform in stage with a rock band, I can therefore give some experience in mic technique. I can invite students to perform on stage with my band, either on voice or guitar. This may be your first chance to play in front of an audience…
