Personal Description:

Hi! I'm a US-born expat and I finished my Master's degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. I've fallen in love with this area, and currently teach privately from my home. I've lived here for just over three years, and am fluent in European oboe and cor anglais styles (which are quite different from how I played and made reeds in America). I started on violin when I was seven, and picked up the oboe at twelve. I still love to play both, though obviously I'm focusing most of my efforts on oboe and cor anglais. I'd love to help you or your child as a beginning oboist, clarinetist, violinist, cellist, saxophonist, or recorder player, or to help students that already know their stuff and want to continue progressing.

Tutoring Experience:

Whilst in university in Iowa, I privately taught oboe for a couple years. After my degree, I went to my home state of Utah. My knowledge and experience on violin helped massively when I got a job teaching beginning orchestra at three elementary (primary) schools in Cedar City. There I taught violin, viola, and cello to 10-11 year-olds with varying degrees of experience, from a couple years under their fingers to complete novices. I also taught choir and music appreciation at a teenage-girls' residential treatment centre in nearby Hurricane. Since moving to the UK, I've picked up several students here, and we're getting on famously! I also taught for a year and a half with the Merthyr County Borough Council Music Service. Come join my budding studio!

Tutoring Approach:

The best educators I've worked with did not give me the answers, but taught me how to ask the right questions. They helped me develop critical thinking by guiding me toward success rather than dragging me there. I strive to be this kind of tutor. While young children may not need the same amount of independent learning as a teenager or adult, I believe the best way to have them develop is a balance between guiding and letting them figure out what they need to do for themselves. Obviously the younger the child the more guidance they need, and the same goes for older learners who are just beginning a new instrument. With all this in mind, I will personally tailor my teaching to you or your child's needs. I value open communication between us, so that I can best deliver what you need from me.
