Personal Description:

Currently based in London, I am a composition student at the Royal Academy of Music. Also I am a freelance singer and regular lay clerk at St. Barnabas, Ealing. I formerly studied at Cambridge, where I was a choral scholar at Jesus college and was a soloist in many concerts and productions. I have been a conductor of both orchestras and choirs, including my own ensemble, 'the Jesus Singers'. More recently I am now directing the children's choir at St. Barnabas.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching singing for 5 years, since my second year of undergraduate study. In that time my students went on to be principals in various productions in Cambridge, both opera and music theatre. While a choral scholar my choir did outreach as far away as Sri Lanka and Hong Kong, and I have run workshops in schools for singing. As a musical director I have worked with performers of all ability levels, and communicating effectively regardless of the student in now one of my most important skills.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is above all an individual approach. There are no blanket teaching approaches, especially when it comes to music, and I always strive to negotiate an effective teaching strategy with my students. As a composer I have a deep appreciation for the mechanics of how music operates and I try to give my students a foundation in this area to help them become a distinctive performer.

I view music as an interconnected web of factors rather than separate categories, harmony and rhythm for example are not two isolated things. Rather, I develop in students the ability to approach music from a variety of directions and still make progress. Pacing is also important to my practice, and finding the right rate of progression is key for students to be engaged and satisfied in their musical development. This also helps in practice with students receiving discrete and achievable challenges rather than thinking of practice as a chore.

The confidence to perform and the resilience to fail is another aspect which I believe needs attention. Students must be built up to be able to stand in front of others and perform, and be comfortable with the idea that it won't always go perfectly. This results in students who are less afraid to make mistakes and who ultimately will be more content with their musical life. The holistic approach that I employ means that my students will leave my lessons as more confident musicians, but also as more confident people.
