Personal Description:

I am an experienced music teacher, tutor, and peripatetic instructor, specialising in violin; also, I hold a degree, a Masters and an MPhil in music, as well as post-16 teacher training accreditation; I am also a freelance examiner for ICMA (graded and diploma exams) and a freelance Standards Verifier for BTEC Music Nationals for BTEC. I am also a music examiner for the International Baccalaureate Programme.

As a violin tutor I cover most grades, and pre-Grade I, having taught children from Key Stage 1 up to A-Level; with regard to viola and keyboard, I taught for two years, usually at KS1 - 3, and organised concerts in a Saturday school.

I taught children and adults privately too, putting them successfully through ABRSM graded exams; whilst a classical music specialist, I am also interested in Irish/Scottish folk music, with some experience as a performer in this area, and I will be happy to teach you this style.

As a violinist I performed with a variety of ensembles, covering symphonic, chamber, classical, early, and contemporary music, as well as taking part in improvisation and experimental music performances. I remain active in this area as a violinist.

Depending on distance, I will travel to your home; the first lesson is a free assessment. I am currently only teaching online, using Skype, Zoom, Whereby, and Teams.

With my experience as FE music lecturer, I will be well suited to teach you music theory, and popular music: all lessons will follow a progressive plan, tailored to your needs.

Pupils are required to have their own instrument, although I will be happy to lend other items, where possible; I will provide copies of materials, such as instructions, exercises, and printed music.

I have been a member of the Musicians' Union and I am a member of the European String Teachers' Association, for which I am the Regional Officer for Aberdeen (and Scotland).

Tutoring Experience:

2018 (Nov.)- p/t Music Lecturer at Edinburgh College
2015 - present: self-employed tutor;
2009 to 2015: Music Instructor at Aberdeen College (North East Scotland College);
2007 to 2008: Music Lecturer (BTEC) f/t, East Berkshire College;
2006 to 2007: Trainee practitioner at Franklin College, Lincs.(Music A Levels) for PGCE FE/HE at Sheffield Hallam University;
2005 to 2007: Music Tutor, Upper Strings and Keyboard, Education Leeds, ArtForms (peripatetic/supply).

Privately, I began tutoring violin in 2003, combining music theory with instrumental teaching, and adding piano tuition during my college teaching (Keyboard Skills and individual ABRSM tuition).

Tutoring Approach:

Using the Common Approach (2002) as a guide, and my teaching experience at college, I have a structured system of progression for learners, tailored to each student.

My fees are proportional to the hour, thus:

1 hour (or over): £35 ;
45 mins. : £26 ;
30 mins. : £17.

I focus on muscular development and posture, intonation, self-evaluation strategies, using technology for learning (apps and devices), encouraging learning through listening as well as reading, engaging with music more widely, and setting realistic/achievable goals.
