Personal Description:

Now in my 50s with a background working in health and music and raising 3 kids - I have always individualised my approach to teaching music and wellbeing - I feel everyone is musical it is just a case of each person finding their individual voice my job as a teacher is to guide and encourage what is already there to be expressed and also the importance of hearing sounds and playing with textures- I love exploring with each person how they best learn and for me making lessons interesting and engaging by really hearing what each person wishes to achieve each term or year or in the long run - people goals and aspirations vary and do change over time. I find I can express feelings through music that I cannot express in words. Currently I am learning the harp - adding quite a few more strings to my bow and putting myself in a learning position is very help fun to understand how it feels to be learning a new instrument.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching health and music now for 25 plus years - teaching individual s and group coaching in orchestras and quartets. I have taught all ages from 2 to 92 . Currently I am doing some training in colour strings a method for teaching young children. In Cambridge other teachers often referred troubled teenagers to me who were thinking of stopping - my teaching is about each individual discovering their own music - and being aware of how they want to play which genres - reading music as well as improvising. I am not so keen on exams - however if an individual is very keen to do the grades I will accommodate this - I use the repertoire lists for music and teach scales along side improvising to really understand the character of the different keys and what emotions can be expressed- I love starting lessons with a cello conversation - encouraging each pupil to express how they are feeling on their cello or violin or what ever instrument I am teaching them. I have extensive experience playign the orchestral repetorei and quartets - if people want help tackling any of this repertoire

Tutoring Approach:

Very individualised - depending on each persons interests and the way they best learn. Mainly helping each individual to feel comfortable with the instrument and exploring what work s best for them. We do some improvising and some reading of music. Once I have a few pupils they are invited to come together a few times a year to play ensemble music and have a tea party to share and celebrate their music. I love teaching musical expression to really express a story or an emotion on the instrument and most of all teaching each person how to generate the most beautiful tone and sound from the instrument - I work with a Luther for violin s and cellos to make sure that the instrument is set up correctly. Happy to do some teaching remotely via computer links . With each lesson on line or in person I email fully comprehensive notes afterwards .
