Personal Description:
I am a multi-instrumentalist, teacher and composer based in Leeds, UK. I teach online via Zoom and in person at my home or the student's home. I primarily teach mandolin, guitar and banjo (tenor and 5-string) and have been teaching privately for 6 years and at Leeds Conservatoire for 3 years.
I have been playing guitar since I was twelve, beginning in rock and moving into bluegrass and folk later. I picked up the mandolin in 2011 and it has since become my main instrument. I have gained invaluable experience playing bluegrass and folk. With my band The Often Herd I have played festivals across the UK and Europe and won the prestigious La Roche Bluegrass Festival band competition award in 2018.
Through my musical academic exploits (GCSE, A Level, BA) and my performance projects, I have also developed a detailed knowledge of music theory.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been offering private instrumental tuition on mandolin, guitar and banjo since 2014 and have taught people ranging from teenagers wishing to pursue a career in music to older students who have taken up an instrument later in life.
As well as my private tuition, I am a Senior Lecturer at Leeds Conservatoire (formerly Leeds College of Music) where I teach 1-1 instrumental lessons on mandolin, guitar and banjo as well as ensemble sessions.
Tutoring Approach:
I teach a wide range of styles on the mandolin and guitar including folk, country and bluegrass and on electric guitar, rock and heavy metal. I also teach Irish folk on tenor (4-string) banjo and bluegrass on 5-string banjo. Beginner teaching will start less specific and can move in any direction the student wishes to take it.
My tuition places an emphasis on developing instrument knowledge, improving listening skills, improvisation/creativity and building technique/repertoire from any style of music.
I notate music/tablature where it's necessary to provide a reference and use recordings of myself and the student to help personal development.
