Personal Description:

I teach Flute and Music Theory at my home in Weybridge. I have recently finished my music degree at the University of Birmingham where I specialised in performance and music education. I am due to start my masters at Birmingham conservatoire next year where I will be focusing further on these specialisms and playing lots of flute. I have taught adults and children before and I am familiar with the ABRSM grades and local exam process.

When I was 7 I was given the opportunity to learn an instrument and I chose the flute, partially because it sounded ‘pretty’ and also because my Grandpa used to play. By the time I was 15 I was playing in Surrey County Youth Wind Orchestra and attending the junior department at the Royal College of Music every Saturday.

Tutoring Experience:

I have always loved teaching people new skills, whether it’s a magic trick, juggling, a simple piece on the piano or how to play the flute. I had some really good flute teachers when I was younger and I now realise how much those experiences shaped my passions and musical skills. I think it’s so important to encourage students and listen to what they want to learn in order to provide exciting and productive lessons. I have thoroughly enjoyed my past teaching experiences, and my Music Education module at university has inspired me to teach more and implement the new tricks and techniques that I have learnt. I will teach any ability and any age and I am flexible in terms of lesson times.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach at my home in Weybridge where there is enough space for social distancing, a piano and a wide range of flute repertoire. Lessons for beginner and intermediate students last 30 minutes but I am happy to do longer lessons in the lead up to an exam or if a student wants more teaching time. I like to provide variety in my lessons because it helps to maintain the interest of the student and also allows us to explore multiple aspects of music and flute playing. I always aim to make my lessons fun and engaging with the main focus being on what the student wants to learn. We will explore a wide range of repertoire including arrangements of any songs the student enjoys and wants to play

I will always begin the lesson with a warm up which includes breathing exercises. This encourages the student to develop the skill of being ready to play their instrument whether it’s for a performance, rehearsal or their own practice. Depending on the level of the player, we will then work on a piece of music which we looked at in the previous lesson. I often use apps when I teach such as notation games and backing tracks, but I will also play my flute for demonstration purposes and accompany using the piano. I am very happy to teach grades and prepare students for exams if they wish but equally, I’m happy for the student to progress using pieces and their own goals instead. I am a strong believer in creating goals so that the student can see their progress and feel a sense of achievement. I encourage daily practice and will require the student to bring a notebook in which we will write goals and practice plans.

I really enjoy experiencing a student’s sense of pride when they achieve something in a lesson and I hope to pass on my passion for music and specifically the flute. I think performance and ensemble playing is so important, not only for developing musical skills but also for developing other qualities such as confidence, social skills and leadership.

I also teach music theory, having completed advanced theory work at university. I am happy to provide separate lessons for theory for students of any instrument. Theory will be included in flute lessons but if the student wants further help with music theory, for example, when preparing for the ABRSM grade 5 theory exam, I will be happy to teach theory separately.
