Information About Deryn - Cleckheaton teacher
This is how 3 referees rated Deryn:
I studied music at the University of Stellenbosch Music Conservatory (South Africa) where I obtained a Performers Licentiate in Music in 1998. I obtained a B Mus (Hons) from the South African College of Music (University of Cape Town) in June 2000. I studied both cello and piano at performance level.
In addition to running a successful music teaching studio I am a professional session cellist and composer. I gained a wealth of professional orchestral and session experience during and after my studies and continue to work as a recording artist for my music partnership, Striking Media Music, and many award-winning media composers in the UK, USA, Europe and the Middle East. Prior to becoming an established session cellist, I was a freelancer in London where I worked with orchestras, ensembles and bands. Highlights included playing at Wembley Arena, the Barbican, St. John's Smith Square and the South Bank.
I contribute articles on playing and teaching to Strings Magazine (String Letter Publishing, USA) and Music Teacher Magazine (Rhinegold Publishing, UK). In 2010 I wrote a method aimed at adults returning to the cello called Restart Cello (published by Music Sales Limited).
I began teaching during my studies (under the supervision of my own teacher) from 1995. I moved to the UK in 2000, and have been a professional cellist and private music teacher throughout my time here. I also worked as a peripatetic instrumental teacher for North Yorkshire Music Service from 2008 - 2010, during which time I was the Senior Strings ensemble director at Selby Music Centre as well as the lower strings coach for Junior Strings, Intermediate Strings and the Youth Symphony Orchestra at Harrogate Music Centre.
My students range from beginner to post grade 8. Their achievements include ABRSM exam passes with merit and distinction up to grade 8, inclusion in the National Children's Orchestra, inclusion in various high standard amateur orchestras in Yorkshire, and progression to their own professional music careers.
My teaching method focuses on body awareness, good technical habits and musical understanding. I have found from my own experience and overseeing the development of my students over many years, that these elements are the keys to musical freedom and authenticity in performance. Exam participation may be encouraged when I think it would benefit the student, but is never compulsory.
With extensive experience of playing in non-classical settings (genres ranging from rock to trailer music), I am able and willing to teach improvisation and non-classical approaches to playing the cello.
As a professional composer and arranger, I am passionate about music theory as a means of enhancing musical development. I am happy to tailor lessons to your specific needs, whether they are learning to read music, passing your theory exams, or simply broadening your understanding of the music you love.
Skype sessions are available for all theory students and more advanced cello students (minimum grade 5 standard); and can also be booked as one-off consultations for exam, audition or concert preparation.
I have a limited number of away slots available and am willing to do a round trip of up to 15 miles. The first 5 miles are free, and after that I charge £0.50 per mile.
I have a strict cancellation policy in place, which benefits my students' progress and commitment.
