I live in a village midway between Whitstable, Faversham and Canterbury with my wife and a number of animals. I enjoy music (mainly playing classical guitar), gardening, reading, cycling and chess. I cycle to lessons with my guitar (unless the weather is really bad in which case I get a lift).
I have been teaching classical guitar for about four and a half years. My students range in age from 7 to mid-70s, and have a variety of interests in the guitar - both in terms of the styles of music they want to play, and also the pace they want to go at. This variety makes the lessons, and lesson preparation, extremely interesting and enjoyable for me, and I hope that some of that rubs off into the lessons.
I heard a good line on the radio this morning: a teacher should be like a swimming coach - someone who encourages and instructs but doesn't drag the swimmer along with a rope. I think that applies to guitar tuition pretty well.
My main goal is to bring progress and enjoyment by finding out what the student wants (or if they are not sure, to give some suggestions) and then tailor the lessons accordingly. If things change then I'm happy to adapt. I plan lessons individually and usually bring printed tuition material either supplementary to, or instead of, any grade or tuition books that might be used. (The plan is only a guide - the student's needs on the day determine what the lesson covers.) I also usually give written notes based on the lesson.
