David was born in 1990 and started to play the drum kit at the age of seven. His drum kit teachers have included Trevor Tomkins, Ralph Salmins and Andrew Bain. He has also studied percussion with David Corkhill, Michael Skinner and Andy Leask. In 2009 he was awarded a place to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Martin Hathaway, Scott Stroman and Malcolm Edmonstone. He is currently a Fellow of the Guildhall School. Whilst at the Guildhall David was part of the Guildhall Jazz Orchestra and had the opportunity to play with the Southbank Sinfonia, as well as being involved in several projects featuring musicians such as Mike Gibbs and Nikki Iles. He graduated from the Guildhall in 2013 with a First Class Honours and was awarded both the Chartered Surveyors' Prize and the Yahama Jazz Scholarship in the same year.
David has experience of teaching a wide range of levels and gained a distinction in his teaching module during his last year at the Guildhall School. In addition to having coached ensembles and individuals in various schools, including Latymer Upper School and Portsmouth Grammar School, he has taught on the Guildhall Jazz Summer School and was assistant director of the Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra. He has also taught privately for a number of years.
Lessons will cover technique, stylistic awareness, history, improvisation, ear training and theory, all depending on the needs of each student. The objective of the syllabus is to foster an holistic approach to drums and musicianship.
