Hello! I am a composer, performer and musician based in Birmingham, UK and a recent graduate of the BMus Composition course with First-Class Honours at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
I enjoy experimenting with different kinds of approaches and mediums such as performance, installation, improvisation, ensemble writing, songwriting and mixed media. I also perform with local Birmingham bands Boat To Row, Gathering Tides and Rosie Tee.
My work spans the writing and working with established ensembles such as Incus Trio, Decibel and Cobalt Duo, to composing and performing in folk fusion and electronic improvisation groups, to memetic-style installations on and off the internet, and to visual work such as writing music for the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s new promotional advert.
In the past two years, I have been a regular one-to-one tutor and workshop leader in the Young Composer's Project, organised by composer and teacher Kirsty Devaney. This project involved working creatively with young people to compose music to film, orchestrate for live ensembles, work with dancers, compose electronic music and give presentations on composition. The project emphasises a strong link between teacher and student, benefiting both and providing music education for the next generation of composers.
I have also worked in schools, assisting with A-Level composition and further preparation for conservatoire and university applications.
“Getting someone in who is a few years ahead of our current students has so far proven extremely useful and motivational to our students. Dan has also enjoyed the experience and is impressed with the students’ work and ability. We are grateful to him for giving up his time.”
– Chris Phelps, Music Teacher at Solihull Sixth Form College
I also run a songwriting workshop with composer Rosie Tee taking place in Lichfield, which invites young people of all experiences to write and perform their own material.
To nurture and build on what passions the student already has, regardless of whether they are musical or not. I emphasis the enjoyment and playfulness of creating music and can offer an exciting and varied program. Students will be able to learn in-depth knowledge of their chosen aspect of composition, whether it be multimedia/working with screen to arranging and orchestrating their own music.
Lessons will be tailored to what and how the student would like to learn and they will ideally work between lessons so that the tuition becomes most beneficial.
