I have a broad base of interests and have previously spent two years teaching maths in a secondary school for children with special educational needs. I have an up-to-date CRB check for working with children. Music has always been important to me; I grew up with folk music, but broadened my experience to include classical music as an adult. My husband and I play in a quartet as well as running occasional Baroque string days locally (Ad Hoc Baroque). This year I have finally bitten the bullet and taken an exam to gain the bit of paper to back up my teaching experience!
I have been running both group and individual lessons for all ages for the past nine years, under the name 'Fiddling Around'. I ran a children's group (actually a system of three progressive groups) in Ashbourne until March 2022: it was set up for primary school children, but I had to expand as they got older and didn't want to leave, so it ended up with children up to year 10! Group teaching became less effective during covid, so I finally closed the groups and transferred my pupils to individual lessons, which are run from my from home. Talk to me about discounts for children. Last year I also invested in some decent equipment which enables me to run Zoom lessons when necessary, although I find face-to-face lessons work better for the violin.
I am passionate about making music tuition accessible to everyone; it's never too late to learn. For me, teaching involves understanding how each pupil learns best and using their individual strengths to guide my approach. I use hands-on materials for music games to aid learning, particularly with children. I recommend 45 minute lessons for younger children and beginners, and an hour for adults; this allows time for all the vital extras, such as clapping games to master reading rhythms, constructing 'note trains' for younger pupils and the circle of fifths for more advanced students. I do not teach specifically to exams but favour a broader approach, although I am happy to enter pupils who wish to take exams when I feel that they are ready. I have teaching experience in both classical and folk music and have a wide range of music at my disposal.
