Personal Description:

Music lessons were the only extra mural activity in walking distance of my childhood home in South Africa. I always got the triangle and deeply envied the girl on the xylophone, but the keyboard part of our class was fun and I had a bit of a knack for it. When Mom finally got a car, she signed me up for one-on-one lessons and from then on, exams, eisteddfods, concerts, and even an opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra brightened my school years.

Unable to identify any other interests to supersede all this, I went on to study Music and now hold a BMus(Ed), HMus and MMus, all of which I graduated with distinction (yes, I'm a bit of a nerd). I teach music, perform, accompany, train church bands, and generally stick my nose in wherever something musical is within arm's reach.

As so often happens with musicians, I got a little greedy along the way. One instrument wasn't enough, so while piano is my first romance, I also play and teach keyboard, various guitars, clarinet, recorder, saxophone and ukulele.

Finally, while I detested it as a child, it turns out my mother was right about just how useful Music Theory can be, so I inflict that on the bravest (pretty much all) of my students too.

Tutoring Experience:

I started teaching privately back in 1996 while I was studying my first degree and soon after joined various music centres around Johannesburg, including Crawford College Lonehill, High School Florida, Roedean School for Girls and The National School of the Arts. When we moved to Somerset West, near Cape Town in 2008, I did the same, working at the Bellville Music Academy, Somerset West Primary, Somerset College, and Somerset House Preparatory School, in addition to my private teaching.

My youngest student was 3 (though most students do better to start when they at least know their alphabet), and my oldest have been in their 70s.

I moved to the UK with my husband late in 2016 and currently only teach privately due to the withdrawal of government funding for Music programmes in schools. I love teaching students of all ages, and also find that I can teach most easily from my home studio, where I can set everything up as I ideally want it.

Tutoring Approach:

After 20 years of teaching, I can honestly say that no two students have ever been the same. Each one has brought their own tastes, abilities, level of devotion, dreams, curiosity and, frankly, odd surprises to the classroom. My job involves helping them to "unwrap their gifts" (as one of my students put it) by exposing them to various types of music and musical experiences, while establishing a solid basis of musical understanding and technique. Regardless of age, the secret to success lies in how much each student takes home and applies in his/her personal practicing. For my part, I try as far as possible to give each one a strong grounding and a positive experience that promises many, many rewards both now and in the future.

2017/2018 rates are as follows:
30min - £15
45min - £20
60min - £25

I do offer various discounts for bulk lessons purchased in advance.
