Personal Description:
Christopher was born in Boston, Lincolnshire in 1989. At the age of eight he began studying classical piano, with Vanessa Hunter B.Ed… but later switched his allegiance to jazz and popular music performance, under the guidance of Ray Fenwick; whilst studying a National Diploma in Music Practice at Boston College (2005-07). In 2008 Christopher enrolled on a Bachelor of Music degree, studying at the University of Hull, and graduated with upper-second class honours in July 2011. Whilst studying he undertook modules in Classical Music Studies and Studio Techniques, but specialised in Jazz and Popular music performance, receiving tuition from Dr. Peter Elsdon and Andy Cholerton. He performed in many ensembles including the University Big Band, Choir and Music Society Jazz Choir. Notable performances include dates at the Scarborough Jazz Club (2011) and The Goodfellowship Inn (2010 & 2011) whilst performing in The Jazz Aesthetic (2009-11). During the summer of 2010 Christopher experienced his career highlight to date, performing as principal pianist/keyboardist, in the pit band, for the production of Dyslexia the Musikal at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
In September 2011 Christopher resumed study at the University of Hull, enrolled on a Master of Music degree, specialising in Performance whilst also studying Musicology. Upon completion of the course in September 2012, Christopher began teaching piano privately whilst maintaining an active career as a freelance performer. He gigs frequently with jazz-fusion trio 9over3 (co-founded in January 2012) and Toto tribute band Dorothy's Dog (founded January 2013).
Tutoring Experience:
Christopher established his teaching business after completing his studies at the University of Hull in September 2012. In addition to members of the general public, he returns to the University to teach undergraduate performance students of varying ages, abilities and interests. Christopher is based in Hull, East Yorkshire, but tuition locations are flexible (within a 10-mile radius) and can be adjusted to suit the students, e.g.: in Beverley, Cottingham, Hessle, North Ferriby, etc. Lessons are designed to be fun and engaging, and are tailored to individual students' needs. Targeted progress is made at the students' own pace, and students can be entered for graded performance and theory examinations if they wish. Part of his teaching philosophy is to prepare students for performance and examinations by sharing his own performance experiences in lessons.
Tutoring Approach:
In lessоns the emphаsis is often оn learning jаzz аnd pоpulаr performance techniques, such аs imprоvisаtiоn аnd аrrаnging. I aim to train students to not only play their instrument well, but to perform. In addition, I аm а clаssicаlly-trаined piаnist аnd I аm аble tо teаch clаssicаl music аnd the required perfоrmаnce techniques if requested.
