Personal Description:

I am a 23 year old private instrumental and composition tutor based in Cardiff, specialising in piano and percussion tutoring. I hold an MA and 1st class BA (Hons) in music from Cardiff University (2017 and 2016 respectively). I have studied piano under James Brown and composition under Arlene Sierra, Robert Fokkens and Pedro Faria-Gomes.

I am an active performer myself, with experience in a diverse range of musical canons and styles including Western classical, jazz, and contemporary music. I have performed across the UK and abroad, at locations such as Bath Guildhall, Salisbury Cathedral, Warwick Arts Centre, Italy and the Netherlands.

Practical qualifications include:
ABRSM Grade 8 piano - (distinction, 2012)
Rock School Grade 8 drums - (2012)
ABRSM Grade 5 theory - (distinction, 2008)

Tutoring Experience:

In 2016 I established my own independent theatre company, 'Quixotic Productions Cardiff' and have since run several group and 1-to-1 rehearsals, workshops and voice coaching lessons with QPC members aged 17-30. While completing my Masters degree I also undertook tuition in how to structure and deliver educational music workshops to primary school aged children.

Additional music-related teaching experience includes my role as assistant MD of Cardiff University Wind Orchestra from 2016-2017, during which time the band held the distinction of #1 ranked amateur wind band in the country. I conducted and rehearsed the band for both competition and recital performances during my tenure, while simultaneously holding the chair of principal percussionist with the ensemble.

Tutoring Approach:

Over my own education as an instrumentalist I have compiled a comprehensive set of resources as an aid to teaching technique, sight reading and repertoire at all levels. I am also able to devise custom exercises and studies for tutees due to my training as a composer.

I consider it important for tutees to gain an understanding of the historical context of whatever pieces they may be learning, rather than to simply focus on the mechanical skills required. This helps to foster curiosity for music in general, and encourages tutees to seek out repertoire that they genuinely have an interest in, outside of the constraints of exam boards.

For composition tutees I focus on developing key fundamentals such as structure, form, thematic development and finding one's own 'style'.

Most importantly however, all music education should be delivered in a fun and engaging way that is never discouraging and motivates students to be creative.
