Personal Description:

I am a PhD student at the University of York, studying Electroacoustic Composition. My musical education started at the age of 9, when I began learning the cello. Since then I have achieved DipABRSM in cello performance, BA (Hons) and MA (by research) in Music.

I have experience in various forms of cello performance, including leading the University of York Symphony and Chamber Orchestra cello sections for a variety of concerts between 2007 and 2009. I also have extensive experience in chamber music, having received a high level of coaching at the residential music course "Pro Corda" between 2000 and 2005. I have since dedicated my cello performance to string quartets, quintets and other forms of chamber music.

As far as Music Technology is concerned, since 2006 I have developed my knowledge through recording and editing a variety of music from contemporary classical and vocal music, to rock. I am currently composing pieces combining acoustic instruments with electronics.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught the cello since 2004 to pupils at beginner level and upwards to those studying grade 8 pieces. In addition to my PhD studies I am the technical assistant in the Music Department, for which my responsibilities include providing help and support with music technology equipment to students and members of staff. I am also in the process of setting up a chamber music coaching programme.

Tutoring Approach:

I would encourage my cello and theory pupils to work towards ABRSM grades, as I believe having regular goals keeps a student focused and provides one with a sense of achievement and good self-esteem. As far as academic Music and Music Technology are concerned, I can give additional tuition and support alongside the student’s GCSE, AS/A level or BTEC National education.

I am based in the Music Department at the University of York and because of the excellent facilities it provides, it would be best for lessons to take place there. Unfortunately I do not have my own transportation so I cannot make home visits.
