Personal Description:
Music has always played a big part in my life and I love to nurture and impart my skills and knowledge to those who are interested in the flute (or recorder if they are very young) . I am interested in many types of music and enjoy singing in a choir and playing in TPO, (The Peoples Orchestra) I also enjoy using my music in a Christian setting. I play the organ for church services and the flute in worship groups.
Tutoring Experience:
I have had more than twenty years of teaching experience, starting out as a music teacher in a middle school, where I taught whole class music and had an orchestra and choir. I then concentrated on peripatetic instrumental teaching, mainly of the flute but also some recorder and clarinet. I have always enjoyed this, entering pupils for Associated Board and Trinity examinations and encouraging them to join local orchestras or wind groups. I have had the [privilege to arranged music for and conduct some of these. I have also taught the flute, recorder and piano privately, teaching pupils between the ages of 4 (recorder) and 70 plus.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe that enjoyment of music is the key to good progression. I tailor my lessons to suit the individual pupil, gradually introducing examination work where appropriate. I understand that not every pupil actually wants to take exams. The choice of tutor book is important and I tend to choose one that has a CD backing track. I always create my own fun exercises and 'warm-ups', which help with rhythm and beat. This is especially important for younger pupils, who need variety in their lessons. I recommend 8 plus as the suitable age to cope with the size of a flute. Younger pupils can start on a recorder or fife, gaining experience in musical elements and enjoyment in for example duet playing.
