I think engaging the student from the outset is very important, and keeping their interest. Of course I teach the basics as they are essential but as soon as possible I introduce patterns that make the student feel like they are really playing the drums, not just tapping monotonously on a practice pad. After all, what makes a student want to play the drums in the first place? Seeing their favourite band/artist on TV I would think, so you need to show them that they can be like their idols, just a little, quite quickly.
Encouraging regular practice is paramount. This requires the practice material not be dull or uninteresting. Therefore I incorporate essential skills onto the kit so make them more interesting.
