Information About Chris - Forest Hill teacher
This is how a referee rated Chris:
Hello! I am a cellist, viol player and academic researcher. As a performer I specialise in chamber music, and am a member of two string quartets (Florian Quartet and Echo Chamber) and the early music ensembles Three Parts Vied and K'antu Ensemble. As a freelance musician I also work regularly with chamber orchestras and other groups including the London Musical Arts Orchestra, NEW Sinfonia and Outcry Ensemble. Alongside my performing activities I'm pursuing a part-time doctorate at King's College London, where my research concerns radical approaches to string quartet playing, inspired by recordings from the early twentieth century.
I have several years teaching experience in a variety of contexts including: instrumental playing from beginner to advanced, chamber music coaching, as well as outreach sessions and workshops. I have also taught undergraduate seminars at King's for two years, in topics including music analysis, the history and philosophy of recording, and eighteenth century keyboard music.
In my instrumental teaching I aim to give students a relaxed, efficient physical foundation from which to explore their creative instincts. I also try to encourage a curiosity-led attitude to music-making, help students of any level to make their own practice more efficient and enjoyable, and equip them with the means to understand and overcome instrumental challenges. It's very important to me that learning music is a positive and rewarding experience! I happily prepare and enter students for ABRSM exams (and can accompany exams, at least up to a certain level), but this structure is not essential to my teaching.
