Personal Description:

Charlie began learning to play the violin at the age of five and is now studying for his Masters degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London under Joshua Fisher.

In 2017, Charlie graduated from Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he studied with Lucy Gould of the Gould Piano Trio and Itzhak Rashkovsky. During his time at RWCMD, Charlie regularly worked with artists including Rachel Podger and Daniel Philips. In 2015, Charlie successfully auditioned for a place with the Royal Welsh String Soloists ensemble who performed at a Gala event at Buckingham Palace in February 2016 as well as with renowned violinist Henning Kraggerud in a concert at the college. In his fourth year, Charlie successfully auditioned for a place on the professional experience scheme with the Welsh National Opera as part of a side-by-side partnership with the college.

A keen chamber musician, Charlie founded the Piano Trio in 2012 with whom he regularly plays across Cardiff and various other parts of the UK. Notable musicians with whom the trio have worked include Bruno Schrecker, members of the Elias String Quartet, London Haydn String Quartet, Emerson String Quartet and the Gould Piano Trio. Recent performances with the trio include appearances at the International Concert Series at St David’s Hall, Cardiff, and the ‘Inner Voices, Outer Worlds’ Schumann Festival at RWCMD.

In 2016, Charlie accepted his role as Leader of the CBSO Youth Orchestra with whom he has worked under conductors such as Michael Seal, Jac Van Steen, Andrew Litton, Edward Gardner and Christian Măcelaru as well as with soloists including Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Alina Pogostkina, Julian Bliss and Steven Osborne. In 2015, Charlie performed Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 with the CBSO Youth Orchestra in their concerto workshop afternoon. Other performances included the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in 2016 and Beethoven’s Romance No. 2 in F in 2017. Charlie has also held principle positions with the Welsh National Youth Opera Orchestra and the RWCMD Symphony Orchestra under David Jones and Carlo Rizzi. Among others, Charlie also plays with organisations including the English Symphony Orchestra, British Sinfonietta, Cardiff Sinfonietta and Orchestra Vitae.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching privately 1-1 for a number of years (some of these have been adult beginners) and also currently hold a teaching position with a music service in London, so I also have experience teaching young people of all ages. As part of my Bachelor degree, I undertook a Teaching Skills module in which I gained an insight in to adapting an approach to teaching which is best tailored for the needs of each and every individual student. It also covered a range of methods for how best to interact with young people. This has been hugely beneficial for my teaching experiences from thereon.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that music is for everyone to enjoy, not only for those who are aiming for a career in music. I like to bring a positive approach to my teaching and always encourage each student to reach their potential. My background in teaching means that I have covered teaching students of all ages and I will always adapt my approach accordingly to fit the needs and abilities of each student.
