Information About Charles - Hove teacher
I am a dyed-in-the-wool musician it's true and have read far too many rock biogs and Mojo column inches but I like to think I hold a slightly broader perspective as well. I speak French, I've traveled loads, I've got two small kids and - I like gardening… But the morning I get up knowing I've got a gig is a morning filled with an almost childlike excitement. And the day after a good gig is always one of smiles and pride. Some things just don’t seem to change!
I have been teaching guitar in and around Brighton for nearly 10 years, both privately and as a peripatetic tutor in a number of schools, and my students are of all ages and abilities. Before that I have been playing guitar and bass in bands for many's the year. As a result, I have a body of experience to draw on when I encounter a new student which allows me to quickly identify areas which will be of help. I am always at least curious about all music and rarely completely stumped by a request to learn an unusual genre or song. But of course I have my likes and dislikes and in my own playing it is improvisation and particularly Rhythm and Blues that really excites me!
The most important thing in a lesson is to get making music as directly as possible. So if you are a beginner, I will teach you something simple enough to be within your grasp straight away, but challenging enough to warrant practice. This approach also applies to higher abilities, although the nature of the challenge is obviously more advanced. Through playing we become more adept at our instrument and we learn experientially about the manifold aspects of music in general, melody, rhythm, theory, tone and so on in an exciting and relevant way. All this encourages us to play more and with greater confidence.
