Personal Description:
I'm Ceri, a professional brass musician and dedicated music educator with a genuine passion for helping students discover the joy of making music.
My Musical Journey:
Music has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember. After completing my BA (Hons) in Music at the University of Salford, I had the incredible privilege of performing with Black Dyke Band - one of the most prestigious brass bands in the world. Standing alongside some of the finest brass players globally taught me not just about technical excellence, but about the discipline, dedication, and pure love of music that creates truly exceptional musicians.
For over 20 years, I've channelled that experience and passion into teaching. What began as peripatetic teaching with Carmarthenshire Music Service evolved into a fulfilling career helping hundreds of students - from nervous six-year-olds picking up a cornet for the first time, to ambitious teenagers chasing grade 8 distinctions, to adults rediscovering instruments they'd put down decades ago.
Why I Teach:
There's something magical about that moment when a student plays their first clear note, or finally nails a passage they've been struggling with, or performs confidently in front of an audience for the first time. Those moments remind me why I love teaching. It's not just about passing exams (though my students do that brilliantly!) - it's about building confidence, developing discipline, and giving people a lifelong skill that brings joy.
I maintain a 100% student satisfaction rate, and many of my former students have gone on to play in youth orchestras, university ensembles, and local brass bands. Some have even pursued music professionally. But I'm equally proud of the students who simply play for pleasure, enriching their lives through music.
Beyond Teaching:
When I'm not teaching, I'm actively involved in the local music community. As conductor of Burry Port Town Band, I work with adult musicians of varying abilities, which keeps me grounded in the reality that learning music is a lifelong journey - there's always something new to discover, whatever your level.
I'm also Co-Chair of the Burry Port Amelia Earhart Centenary Group, where I've been coordinating major community projects. This role has sharpened my organizational skills and reinforced my belief in the power of bringing people together around shared passions - whether that's local history or making music.
In an unexpected creative turn, I taught myself documentary filmmaking and created "The First Grand Adventure!" about Amelia Earhart's 1928 transatlantic flight. The film won Best Documentary at both the Wales International Film Festival and Santa Fe Movie Awards. This experience taught me that learning new skills at any age is possible with dedication and the right guidance - exactly what I aim to provide for my students.
My Teaching Philosophy:
I believe that anyone can learn to play brass with the right foundations, patient guidance, and consistent practice. I've taught shy children who blossomed into confident performers, teenagers who thought they'd "never get it" but achieved grade 8, and adults who were certain they were "too old to learn" but proved themselves wonderfully wrong.
My approach is supportive, encouraging, and built on mutual respect. I set high standards because I believe in my students' potential, but I also understand that everyone progresses at their own pace. There's no judgment in my lessons - only guidance, encouragement, and celebration of every milestone achieved.
What Students Can Expect:
When you study with me, you're getting more than just technical instruction. You're learning from someone who has performed at the highest level, taught for two decades, and genuinely cares about your musical journey. I'm reliable, professional, punctual, and fully committed to helping you achieve your goals - whether that's playing your first solo, passing grade 5, or joining your local brass band.
I look forward to helping you discover what you're capable of achieving with your brass instrument!
Tutoring Experience:
I have over 20 years of continuous teaching experience across a wide range of educational settings, working with students from age 6 through to adults in their 70s.

Tutoring Approach:
With over 20 years of teaching experience and having performed with the world-renowned Black Dyke Band, I bring both professional expertise and a patient, supportive teaching approach to every lesson.
My Teaching Methodology:
My approach is built on establishing strong foundations from day one. Whether you're a complete beginner picking up a brass instrument for the first time or an advanced player preparing for grade 8 exams, I focus on:
Solid Technique - Correct breathing, embouchure, posture, and tone production form the basis of everything we do. Getting these fundamentals right early prevents bad habits and accelerates progress.
Tailored to You - Every student learns differently. I adapt my teaching style to match your individual needs, learning pace, and musical interests. No one-size-fits-all approach here.
Making Music Enjoyable - Yes, we work on technique, but we also make sure you're playing music you love. Whether that's classical, jazz, brass band repertoire, or contemporary pieces, lessons should be engaging and fun.
Exam Preparation Excellence - I have extensive experience preparing students for ABRSM, Trinity, and other graded exams, with many achieving distinctions. We'll cover all aspects: scales, sight-reading, aural tests, and performance pieces.
Building Confidence - I create a supportive, encouraging environment where mistakes are part of learning. My 100% student satisfaction rate reflects my commitment to helping every student succeed.
Lesson Structure:
Typical lessons are 30 minutes for younger beginners, 45 minutes for intermediate students, or 60 minutes for advanced players and adults. Each session includes:
Warm-up exercises and technical work
Repertoire development
Sight-reading practice
Theory and musicianship skills
Goal-setting for practice between lessons
