Personal Description:

My name is Carol, I am 22 years old, and I have been teaching the Tin Whistle for around 7 years. I did music for A level, and I studied performance at Queens, Belfast. I would be delighted to take on beginners, intermediate and advanced students. I live in the Belfast area, and would be available to come one to one and give individual or group lessons. I have been in several bands over the years, and I would love to spread my love of traditional irish music with others in the form of tutoring!

Tutoring Experience:

I have been tutoring one to one in my own home for many years, guiding my students through their traditional grades ranging from grades 2-8, with a success rate of 100% merits and distinctions. I have also tutored in the traditional arts partnership which is my local Traditional music school, and I have tutored the under 12, 12-15 and 15-18 multi-instrumental groups. I take classes of adults and children, and have guided many students to success with competitions such as feis's and fleadhs to traditional grades. I have also branched out and tutored at GAA clubs for the Scor na Nog competition. On the whole, I love teaching group and individual lessons, and I am at ease with anyone from beginner to advanced.

Tutoring Approach:

In a one to one environment, I would sit down with the student and decipher what their goals and objectives are for coming to lessons. Every student will get the same range of knowledge whether they are there casually, for work on grades or if they have an upcoming competition. My method of teaching a tune is to write out a tune for the student, and play it a few times so they get an idea of how it should sound. I then play the line once, and we will play it together. This seems to be my most successful method for teaching a tune. We would also work on learning by ear, expanding repertoire, ornamentation, phrasing, listening to different players and styles and learn a wider range of tunes. I am also willing to help them with any aspect of traditional music, as I studied trad as part of my university course, and I would be glad to focus on this as well as the instrument and technical ability.
