Personal Description:

Since graduating at the top of my year group at Newcastle University's School of Music in 2017, I have begun a busy and exciting career as a professional musician. Whilst I play a variety of instruments, I specialise in bass performance (which was the focus of my degree), and am in high demand both at home and abroad. In recent years, touring has taken me to the USA, Norway, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Switzerland and Denmark - to name a few!

I am an open minded musician, and thrive on being taken out of my comfort zone. As such, I'm experienced in a variety of genres and styles - from rock to free jazz to hip-hop to bluegrass to funk etc. etc. - and am always happy to put a special emphasis on any area of music that my students might have a particular interest in. Personally, most of my professional work is rooted in folk and traditional music, particularly the music of Scotland and Ireland. As a result, I've been honoured to perform at some of the world's biggest folk music events, such as Tønder Festival in Denmark, Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, Milwaukee Irish Fest in the USA, and the Scots Trad Awards in Dundee. If you are interested in folk or bluegrass music then I am the ideal teacher for you! As a guitarist, I specialise in DADGAD tuning, and can teach both how to flatpick and accompany traditional tunes. Naturally, I'm happy to teach in standard tuning and cover any styles that may interest in you!

Studying for a degree in music and working as a professional musician demands a deep understanding of the principles of music theory and music production. I am happy to offer tutoring in both of these areas either alongside or independently of instrumental lessons.

Tutoring Experience:

I am experienced in both one-on-one and group teaching, and enjoy the different challenges that each teaching scenario and student presents. I am comfortable teaching children and adults alike, and am DBS certified. Whilst studying for my degree, I regularly taught at a youth folk music group in Teeside. The project co-ordinator was kind enough to write me the following reference at the end of my tenure: "Bevan is a highly talented musician, an inspiring role model and a fine teacher of aspiring young folk musicians. He has an enthusiastic, easy-going and inclusive style of teaching. He is very adaptable and encouraging to those who don’t find that playing comes quite so easy, and he brings a wide range of tunes that are appropriate to teach to a younger age group. Our youth folk band really enjoyed his year as their tutor and a couple of the tunes he taught us have since become firm favourites in the band's repertoire".

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to both music tuition and music in general is the same: there's no point in doing it if you're not having fun! Making music can be one of the most meaningful and fulfilling ways to spend your time, and I consider it my job as a teacher to help my students to foster a deep and lifelong love of playing. I also like to emphasise the importance of individual expression. My aim isn't just to teach you your scales, exercises etc… but to give you the tools, encouragement and guidance to help you develop your own mature and powerful musical voice, and to find the same deep satisfaction in doing so as I have.
