I'm a conservatoire trained pianist, composer and teacher in London. Originally from Yorkshire, I'm a friendly, warm teacher who has experience teaching students at all levels and ages, regardless of skillset or background. My training in Composition from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (with a secondary focus on Piano) has led me to have a lucrative freelance career since leaving education. I've performed and had my works played at The Place Theatre, Lyric Hammersmith, and has had premieres with National Youth Theatre. I am very passionate about music education and I believe there should be no limit to what each individual student can achieve.
I have had multiple private students over my time in London, and teach and assist at The Conservatoire at Blackheath to children and adults of all ages.
In Trinity Laban, I undertook multiple teaching modules and went into schools to teach group workshops to children alongside individual tuition.
I am very able to adapt my teaching style to each individual's needs and have been delivering high quality teaching for over a year now.
I teach piano for beginners to advanced students of all ages, having experience in working with students of all abilities and ages. In the piano lesson we will cover:
- Note reading
- Rhythm exercises
- Musical expression
- Possible singing and piano
- Working towards doing grades (if the student wishes)
- Fun and interesting repertoire (part prescribed by myself and also including any requests the student may have)
I'm primarily a composer having received world-class training at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, taught under Errollyn Wallen and Stephen Montague. I've had premieres in the Resolution Dance Festival at The Place, in theatre at Lyric Hammersmith, Theatre Royal Stratford East and Battersea Arts Centre, and most recently I've had a premiere with National Youth Theatre. I'm also a singer/songwriter with a strong knowledge in traditional and contemporary songs. In Composition, I'm able to start teaching students of any ability and age. In the lesson we would cover:
Usually, the student would bring me pieces they are working on and we can have a discussion about the piece(s), but I can also set composition tasks to help further the student’s aims.
In a theory lesson, I would cover all the theory needed, having knowledge of all the exams boards specifications and from over 4 years of training from the conservatoire. Theory lessons are often seen as daunting, but I would make sure they are taught in a relaxed, fun manner, with exciting exercises and examples of how theory is put into use in other works.
I believe music should primarily be fun and having fun is the best way to learn! I also believe in the power of letting the student have a big say in what they want to learn as nothing is worse than a teacher solely pre-prescribing pieces! I'd have an open discussion where students can suggest pieces they want to learn, I would suggest pieces that would be beneficial for them too, and of course, help them learn the basics of theory and conventional techniques.
