Information About Ben - Lewisham teacher

Personal Description:

I am a post graduate with a BA hons in creative music technology. My degree was a broad study on music technology, composition and performance. I am 22 years old and have been playing the the Drum kit for 11 years. I have not taken any graded exams, however I have studied up to grade 6 and I can read drum music with some experience in playing for orchestras. Generally I am a drum kit player and play in various bands at the moment.

Tutoring Experience:

My first experience in teaching (2007) was as an assistant to a local 'rock school' where groups of young musicians would take part in a week long school of musicianship working towards a final gig in which they would play.

Before university (2009 - 2010), I taught 4 students between the ages of 5 - 12 on a weekly basis in their home.

During university I was employed as a music leader trainee for the Cambridge Junction. This consisted of weekly workshops in local secondary schools, in which I would run short percussion workshops working with other musicians who would then run other workshops on their specialist instrument. During this time I took part in a full day of workshop training, learning about techniques in percussion workshop structuring and techniques.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach would vary for the student. Generally I would insist on learning how to read music with a combination of improvisation techniques and rudimental practice. Depending on the age of the student, I found that learning to play the drum part of a particular song they liked was a good way of learning how to play with a group. If I taught at my home, I would often record the student playing along to a backing track so that I could make them a CD to play to their parents or carers.

Much of what I would teach were techniques that I found most beneficial when learning in my early years.
