Information About John Ashley - Bath teacher
This is how 2 referees rated John Ashley:
I studied singing at the Royal academy of Music under the tuition of Joy Mammon 1992-1992 where I achieved a B-Mus. I also passed the LRAM teachers certificate. This certificate insures that progressive teachers have a secure knowledge of vocal training. I went onto to have a good career performing opera with Scottish Opera, WNO and Covent Garden. As well as Opera I performed many Gilbert and Sullivan roles with the Carl Rosa touring company. I have also performed in Musical theatre which I teach many students at Bristol university. On occasion I still perform professionally.
I have been teaching on and off for fifteen years but in the last eight years my teaching now dominates my profession. At present I teach singing at Bristol University where I have been for the last four years but also teach privately. I have also taught at schools and have an up to date enhanced DBS Disclosure certificate. I have a good knowledge of Lieder, French song and Italian song as well as Opera and teach in these prospective languages. I also accompany my students on the piano.
My teaching approach is based largely on the Husler technique which I studied with Joy Mammon and Peter Harrison and my own experience that I have developed over the years. I encourage my pupils to perform like an actor does rather than being glued to a copy of music. Responding to their emotions and trusting that what will be, will be from the very start and not being too analytical or self critical! At the same time I work hard on vocal exercises to increase range and flexibility. I feel the connection between over all performance and technique is crucial and am at pains to not let my pupils become too dominant in one or the other. ie all technique no communication and vice versa. My lessons are largely about letting go and having fun and not worrying so much about the dots on the page!
