Personal Description:

ISM Full member

After graduating with a B.A.(Hons.) from the University of Malta, I pursued my studies at the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini, Florence, Italy, funded by a scholarship by the Italo-Maltese Commission through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Following an MMus degree at the University of Surrey, studying composition, conducting, classical studio production and musicology, I was awarded a PhD in Composition by the same institution.

My compositions were performed in Malta, Italy, the UK and the USA. My composition Dreams of the Sea (2002), words by W. H. Davies, was highly commended in the 2002 edition of the international competition, ‘Poesie in Musica’, organised by the Local Council of Cesenatico, Italy. This same composition was competitively chosen to be performed in the USA in 2004. Another of my works, the electroacoustic composition Gentle Giants (2003), was the winner of the prestigious Joyce Dixey Composition Award, 2003 edition, organised by the University of Surrey in conjunction with MCPS (Mechanical Copyright Protection Society).

Apart from my teaching, performing and composition activities, I am currently the Musical Director of a local Orchestra which I prepare and conduct in three public concerts yearly.

Tutoring Experience:

I have over 25 years of experience as a MUSIC TEACHER, teaching a variety of ages from 7 to adults. My approach varies not only depending on the student's age, but I also try to make it relevant to the personal life situation of the particular individual. In the case of a child this mostly translates in trying to relate his/her music tuition with other subjects that he/she is studying at school.

My experience covers both individual tuition as well as class room teaching. The advantage of getting individual tuition is that the one-to-one interaction cannot be rivaled by classroom situations.

Tutoring Approach:

PIANO (Beginners - Intermediate)
KEYBOARD (All levels)
Brass (Beginners - Advanced)
MUSIC THEORY (for Grade 5 and beyond)
MUSIC TECHNOLOGY and Sound Design (Different fees may apply - Call)
[Please note that all fees are correct at time of first publication]
Tuition - Mondays to Saturdays (No tuition on Sundays)

My course concentrates on enabling individuals to build their musicianship and encourage them to become independent in interpreting music. This includes the fluent reading of music notation and skills in turning the dots into sound in a musical way. Depending to age, this is achieved through a variety of fun activities and exercises where needed.
Brass tuition also cares about developing a sound breathing technique and air support which will facilitate sound production.

Theory - Composition - Music Technology - Sound Design: These subjects will be tailor made according to one's own necessities, abilities and aims.
For Music Technology I can teach a variety of software packages but specialise mostly in creative use of sound, sound capture, sound synthesis, sound manipulation and sound sculpture.
Others such as sequencing, notation software, and audio editors are also possible.

For PIANO, BRASS and THEORY classes: I follow ABRSM syllabus. (Exams not compulsory)
