Personal Description:

I am an experienced musician who has worked across many areas of musical life. I have performed as a soloist, accompanist, and with bands, groups, choirs and orchestras.
I have also extensive knowledge of the recording process and of music publishing.
I am also a songwriter/composer and have had a book on creative piano playing as well as several solo piano collections published.
I recently moved in the Durham area after living in Essex for the past 10 years.

Tutoring Experience:

My teaching experience is vast and includes: one-to-one; classroom and on-line. I have taken students through Associated Board and Trinity exams; prepared GCSE and A Level recitals. As a classroom teacher I am familiar with OCR and EDEXCEL boards and have taught A level and GCSE in the classroom, including composition and music technology.
As part of my role in the publishing industry I would frequently travel across the world delivering lectures on best practice for piano teachers, meeting some of the very best practitioners in the process.
I am also a member of EPTA (European Piano Teachers Assoc) and on the expert panel for The Curious Piano Teachers organisation.

Tutoring Approach:

Music is unique in many ways, almost exclusively it requires both areas of the brain (logic - creative) to be co-operating at once. High calibre musicians both understand how music works, and deliver musical performances. As a teacher I try to balance these two elements from the beginning so the student is in control of their learning and able to move progressively from one piece to the next by transferring previous conceptual learning.
Each student is unique too, but the music is constant, so we find the best way to help the student realise both how to be play and think musically. Using exams as stepping stones to measure progress when appropriate and necessary. In my experience, students and parents like exams if they pass them so I try always to prepare them to succeed.
