Personal Description:

Hi! My name is Andrew, and I'm a professional composer and pianist, originally from Australia but now based in London. I recently graduated from the Royal College of Music, London, as a Master of Music with Distinction, and have extensive professional experience as both composer and performer.

As a composer, I've worked with a whole range of venues and ensembles, including the Royal Academy of Arts, Cadogan Hall, Explore Ensemble, and various orchestras. I am currently a Composer on the ABRSM Composer Mentoring Scheme, which means I write pieces to ABRSM briefs for their graded examinations - so I have a really good working knowledge of the syllabus and exam process. I am also a current Royal Philharmonic Society Composer (2021-22) and recent recipient of the Dankworth Prize in Jazz Composition (2021).

As a pianist, I completed my Associate Diploma in Piano (AMEB) back in Australia in 2014, and in my time in London I've worked regularly as a gigging jazz pianist ranging from solo to larger ensemble settings, and having performed in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall stage, V&A Museum, amongst others.

Tutoring Experience:

I am an experienced teacher, having taught Composition, Piano (both Classical and Jazz), as well as tutoring in IB Music (SL and HL) since late 2014.

From 2017 to 2021 I also variously served as a Teacher and Course Tutor on a number of schemes run by Royal College of Music 'Sparks' (the RCM's flagship educational/outreach programme). This included, amongst other things, tutoring students in the creation of new works for their GCSE and A Level submissions.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a firm believer in the fact that anyone can make music - whether it be through playing an instrument or writing their own pieces, songs, soundscapes, or whatever it might be. I always try to bring a personalised approach to the needs of students, incorporating a targeted focus on both short term goals as well as broader overarching personal targets (e.g. passing graded examinations for piano students, or gaining entry into Junior Conservatoire or Conservatoire for composers, etc.), so as to make the most of their innate musical potential. And, as a matter of principle, I always try to make lessons engaging and fun -- it's the best way to learn, after all!

Further to the above, there's a lot of variety to what we'd be doing in any given lesson: often it will start with your own music as a starting point, and from there we can branch out into discussions on how you might develop it, or other useful listening and reading resources that might relate to it, or even just spend time writing it under a bit of extra guidance and supervision. It isn't an issue if you don't have much music of your own to show at any given lesson, either, as we can spend the time working through compositional exercises to help sharpen up your technique and get your creativity flowing.

If you'd like to discuss any of this further or how I might be able to help you or your child in their musical journey, don't hesitate to get in touch.
