This is how 2 referees rated Amanda:
I graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2011, where I read music. The course was mostly based on composition, analysis and theory, and its external equivalent is the LMusTCL from Trinity-Guildhall. In addition to this, I held a choral award at Sidney Sussex, performed in many other choirs, gave professional solo recitals and performed in musicals and operettas.
Over the past 8 years my singing, acting and playing have taken me on tour to America, Italy, France, Austria, Germany and Spain, allowed me to sing in choirs at the Bridgewater and Albert Halls, and had me broadcast on live radio (BBC radio 3) and television (among other things on a recent BBC documentary about Elgar). I have played piano since I was 14 (I took my grade 8 just after I graduated from Cambridge), taught myself the clarinet (getting from beginner to grade 8 in a year and a half), achieved a distinction in my ABRSM grade 8 voice in 2008 and attained my diploma in voice in 2011, so I'm very used to prepping for music exams!
I have experience of all kinds of singing, from classical to musical to jazz to pop and rock, and am not only happy to help students achieve TG or ABRSM grades, but also would be very happy to prep adults and children for auditions and shows. I frequently perform in new musicals and UK tours of actor-musician shows and am always keen for a new challenge.
I have taught piano and singing to children aged 6-16, and also to adults who are just beginning their musical journey, or who have been away from their instrument for a long period of time and want to take it up again. I have always tailored my students' learning around whatever they wanted to do or achieve, whether it be to learn new music quickly, to focus on rhythm and chords, or just to play their favourite tunes. I have also taught theory, getting one complete beginner to pass his grade 5 after a period of 6 months.
Over the past few years I have also created and directed several small choral ensembles, from a madrigal group at college to a jazz a cappella choir at university. In all these situations I teach during the rehearsal - whether it be correct singing technique or how to grasp a tricky rhythm - to ensure that the group can understand the music and perform it to the best of their ability. During university I also used to informally 'teach' friends topics (as they would do to me) in order to revise or share a new concept. Sometimes this teaching would be in the form of an academic discussion, and at others would be more like a mini-lecture and answering questions.
I also gave a drama workshop to pupils at my college after I left, and helped critique and improve other students’ monologues whilst I was a student there, so I have experience of teaching the theatrical side of things, too.
I believe that music should be about more than just getting the right notes in the right order. If you don't connect to it, you won't be able to express it. This applies to both practical and theoretical aspects: having a real, solid understanding of how and why music works, and how and why it evolved over time (and not just memorising enough tips and tricks to get you past grade 5) enriches both playing and listening experiences (though I have to admit that passing grade 5 theory is bloomin' handy, so I can just do that, too. Just be prepared for sneaky extras thrown in!).
