Personal Description:

Alice Elizabeth BEM GTCL LTCL (PftT) (née Larner) is a piano and singing teacher and is also the Musical Director of the University Plymouth Choral Society.

Originally from Cheshire, Alice has just relocated from Aberdeenshire (after working there since 1990) as Musical Director of Haddo House Choral & Operatic Society and the young Haddo Voices choirs based near Aberdeen in Scotland. She was also the founder and Artistic Director of the Haddo Arts Festival (until November 2016).

A fully qualified conservatoire trained pianist and singer, Alice has recently moved to Penzance in Cornwall and has started up a new teaching practice there.
She has an unprecedented success rate with pupils of all ages in exams, auditions and performances.

She has over 35 years experience of teaching aspiring musicians and has helped many gain access into conservatoires, colleges, universities and stage schools.

She is also an experienced choral conductor having taken rehearsals and conducted concerts and operas at Haddo House since the early 90s. All the non-auditoned choirs she led won competitions locally and nationally.

She is a member of the professional body the Incorporated Society of Musicians (Private Teachers Section), is fully DBS checked and was recently honoured with the British Empire Medal in the Queens 90th Birthday honours for Services to Music in Aberdeenshire.

Tutoring Experience:

35 years as a private teacher, her pupils regularly win first places Music Festivals and has a 100% success rate in ABRSM exams. She enters pupils right up to grade 8 and beyond and has had pupils accepted into The Royal College of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music, the Guildhall School of Music, Trinity College of Music, The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Leeds College of Music, The Arts Educational Schools London, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, and many university music departments.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning the piano is fun with Alice – she makes sure her pupils can really read music well from the start so there are no hurdles later on that can cause frustration. To Alice, the ability to sight-read is the most important aspect of playing and her pupils are second to none in this field.

She uses lively books and imaginative techniques to keep little children interested and happy. Lessons usually start from age 6 and upwards.

Many teachers take short cuts, but with her proper careful tuition, the foundations are secured, helping ensure future success. If there’s a choice, it’s important to choose a conservatoire-trained teacher for you or your child.

Alice’s piano pupils regularly gain passes with ‘distinction’ in the ABRSM exams, win classes Aberdeen and North East Scotland Music Festival, get top marks in school exams and enjoy playing in public in local concerts.
Many pupils do not take exams or appear in public but still enjoy their lessons in a pressure-free environment.

Singing pupils are taught from the age of 15 approximately, and are prepared for school exams, ABRSM exams (with near 100% ‘distinction’ passes) and auditions or learn just for fun.
Alice has a proven track record of teaching young singers safely through the period when the voice can so easily be damaged, mainly using classical repertoire.

Over the past years, many of her pupils (aged from 15 – 80!) appeared in operas, concerts and shows throughout the North East Scotland. Some still sing regularly as wedding singers and at corporate events and some have even gone on to train at music colleges and now have professional careers.

Alice offers to accompany her singing pupils when they perform, providing much needed support musically and emotionally.

Alice also offers the best in theory tuition, having helped countless people pass their ABRSM Grade V Theory exams with a 100% pass rate.
She also coaches instrumentalists for their aural tests for ABRSM and Trinity-Laban exams and can serve as an accompanist for them and singers as required.

She teaches piano, singing and theory at all grade levels right up to diploma.

Alice was taught to play the piano and to sing by the very best of British teachers and now she passes this invaluable knowledge on to the next generation of musicians. She has an innate understanding of musical styles from renaissance to present day music.
She is a long term member of the professional body the ‘Incorporated Society of Musicians’ is DBS checked and is one of very few teachers to be admitted to their specialist ‘Private Teacher’s Section’.

Alice’s pupils of all ages become her friends – she really cares about their progress and their well-being generally. Pupils get opportunities to perform in pupils concerts if they wish and Alice has particular success with teenagers of all abilities.
