Personal Description:

I have recently graduated from the University of Leeds with an upper-second honours degree in music (BA), majoring in performance in my final year. My primary instrument is drum kit, but I also play classical saxophone up to grade 5 standard and am a competent, self-taught pianist.

Music has been a passion of mine from an early age. I joined the Richmond Jazz Orchestra at the age of ten and continued to study and play jazz extensively at the Birmingham Conservatoire, NYJO and through private function gigs. Although I specialise in jazz my teaching abilities are not limited to this genre. I also have a high level of experience playing and teaching contemporary styles such as Rock, Pop, Blues and Funk.

I currently play drums in and compose music for a band with whom I perform regularly around the UK and in Europe.

Tutoring Experience:

I have three years experience teaching drum kit privately to pupils of all ages, ranging from 3 years old to adult.

I have access to a car and am willing to travel to teach as well as carrying out tuition from from my own home.

Tutoring Approach:

My starting point as a teacher is to find out what the pupil wants to achieve from the lessons, their musical interests and then discuss any past experience they might have. From this point I am able to establish the level they are at and what areas of drumming they would like to study. My approach to teaching is very adaptable and I always consider the most appropriate way of explaining and/or demonstrating technique to each individual student.

I always aim to put my pupils at ease from the first lesson and have a very positive teaching style that makes studying this instrument fun as well as challenging. I believe this is achieved through ensuring that my pupils get as much practical playing time as possible within the lesson.

I am flexible about practice outside of lessons but encourage students to do as much practice as they feel necessary, given their other time commitments, for maximum results.
