Personal Description:
Alex is a London based Saxophonist and woodwind multi instrumentalist. He is currently studying with Scholarship towards a Masters in Jazz Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Alex has experience across a wide range of genres, including jazz, big band, pop, RnB contemporary classical. He has experience working with small bands and singers through the process of writing and releasing music and has played at Love Supreme Jazz festival as well as recorded and played with several RnB and pop singers.
Alex has lots of experience working with different instrumentalists, having directed a jazz big band for 3 years and played in big bands including the National Youth Jazz Orchestra since 2019.
As well as his experience as a musician, he also completed an integrated masters degree at Durham University in mathematics and physics, specialising in theoretical particle physics. Alex's academic experience and breaking down of complex concepts has informed his approach to music both as a learner and a teacher.
Tutoring Experience:
Alex currently teaches weekend group lessons of mixed abilities and all instruments with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. This work is thoroghly rewarding as he gets to dig into fundamental jazz concepts with people from different backgrounds and experience levels.
Tutoring Approach:
Supporting the ongoing studies and interests of a student a crucial to Alex's teaching approach. Finding out the student's own interests, while building their confidence, creativity, and exploring new music and new approaches. The overarching goal in his approach is to have fun while learning.
He offers musical guidance, tuition and exploration as well as more exam focused sessions depending on the student's aims.
Areas include: Music theory, Jazz improvisation, Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute.
