Personal Description:

I've been fascinated by music for as long as I can remember and used to love singing as a child. Then, around the age of 9, my older brother started introducing me to albums by the bands he was into and it didn't take long for me to fall in love with everything 'rockn'roll', especially the guitar! After months of nagging my dad finally arrived home one day with my first guitar, a second-hand acoustic wrapped in an old piece of curtain, and I started my first lessons. Luckily for me, my teacher at the time quickly showed me things I could play that sounded great and from then on I just couldn't get enough!

I progressed on to electric guitar and started playing in my first bands. My next teacher encouraged me to read music and learn a bit of theory so I expanded my playing to include classical and a little bit of jazz and then went on to widen my knowledge even further through A level music to include composition and knowledge of other instruments and styles.

By this time I was still enamoured by the hot-shot players in the guitar world but, when I got to music college, my musical appreciation expanded beyond anything I could have imagined! Even aside from my studies, mixing with my fellow students from all sorts of musical backgrounds opened my eyes to whole worlds of music I would have otherwise overlooked. I cannot underestimate the benefit, alongside more formal learning, of simply playing with, and listening to, other musicians on my career so far.

As a performer I have enjoyed vast experience playing in pop/rock/blues/soul/funk bands, classical ensembles, small and large-scale jazz ensembles, solo acoustic and classical guitar, accompanying singers, folk acts, theatre productions… and more! I've found having such a diverse performance background a hugely valuable resource when teaching and can help aspiring performers with everything from the basics of stagecraft to choosing good instrument and equipment sounds and working with other musicians.

Tutoring Experience:

Fully qualified with up-to-date DBS (formerly known as CRB) certification, I have been teaching both privately and in schools for the last 17 years and for Wiltshire Music Service from 2008 to 2013.

Tutoring Approach:

I provide tuition to pupils of all ages whether you wish to play purely for enjoyment, enter for grade exams or prepare for a career in music.

Lessons can include technique, rhythm, lead-playing, songs, reading (notation, tablature, chord charts etc), improvisation, composition/songwriting, theory, backing tracks, recording or anything else you'd like help with. The amount of theory and how it's approached in lessons can be tailored to your own learning style and I've had many years of experience and success helping students get to grips with just enough to suit their needs and, most importantly, apply it to their playing straight away.

Taking grade exams is entirely optional but, for those keen to do so, I can help prepare for grades in electric, classical, acoustic and bass guitar from those offered by RGT, Trinity/Guildhall, Rockschool, LCM and ABRSM. I have an excellent track record in preparing students for exams with almost all achieving merit or distinction.
