Personal Description:

I have been playing guitar for most of my life - which amounts to quite a long time now I’m in my early 30s!

I’ve been a performer ever since my teenage years, starting with an interest in heavy rock and punk music and playing in local bands in Derby. I’ve worked extensively as a session guitarist and played in folk duos, pop, psychedelia bands, as a solo classical guitarist, and in funk bands. I’ve found the range of my genre interests is a fantastic grounding for teaching (and means I don’t at all judge anyone’s tastes! Be honest!) I now write, perform and record solo as AJ Porter. One of the things I love most about teaching is when a student gets me into a new artist or inspires my songwriting.

I have multiple Grade 8 qualifications and several years experience as a private guitar teacher in Manchester.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching privately from my home in Manchester for three years, and have recently branched out into online tuition. For those who cannot travel to South Manchester - I am now taking on Zoom / Skype clients.

I have over 18 years of playing, performing and writing experience that I love to share with my students.

Tutoring Approach:

I create a relaxed and positive atmosphere in my lessons which I achieve through plenty of encouragement, praise, patience and focusing on music the student actually enjoys! In our first lesson - which is completely free, no obligation - we will have a chat about what music inspires you and I will use this discussion to properly plan your future lessons.

Your lessons will be tailored to your specific wants and needs - no two students are exactly the same. My approach is friendly, but very thorough. I take great care to plan my lessons and do all I can to aid the student’s practice after lessons. A big weakness of my own music lessons as a child was that I often enjoyed it in the moment, then was unclear on how best to practice at home. This is something I’m careful to avoid with my students! I’m always learning and improving by talking with other teachers, and most of all I hope my students enjoy and look forward to their lessons.

I have countless book resources, which can be used in person or sent to webcam students as PDFs. I often also handwrite notes ahead of time for students, specific to their learning, and after lessons like to send short videos via WhatsApp to aid practice.
