I am a private piano teacher in Manchester, a tutor at Yorkshire Young Musicians, an examiner for ABRSM, and a soloist both in recital and with orchestras across the UK. I also conduct St. John's Festival Orchestra in Chester. As an alumnus of Royal Northern College of Music, I graduated with undergraduate and two postgraduate degrees in performance, where I studied with John Gough and Dr. Murray McLachlan as a Drapers' and Oglesby scholar. Before this I studied with Russian pianist, Irina Glushenkova. Prizes include first place in the EPTA UK piano competition and the RNCM Fergal O'Mahony competition. I have also been a finalist in international competitions both in the UK and abroad, and the RNCM Gold Medal competition. As a teacher I am passionate about the training of the next generation of talented and dedicated pianists and musicians, and my teaching aims not just at a robust piano technique, but also a well-rounded artistry and musicianship. A number of my pupils have gone on to study at both Chetham's School of Music and RNCM. More details can be found on my external website.
My studies at the RNCM lasted 7 years. Since then I have been teaching for more than 5 years (at Yorkshire Young Musicians as well as privately), and in that time have acquired a huge amount of experience teaching all levels and abilities. A number of my students have gone on to study at music school and music college, but equally I enjoy teaching students of all levels and abilities whose ambitions are not necessarily any more than to play for pleasure. And so I encourage anybody looking for a piano (or music theory) teacher to get in touch. I ask only an enthusiasm to learn, and an instrument on which to practise! Student testimonials can be found on my external website.
I believe in shaping independent, artistic and well-rounded musicians. My approach necessarily changes from student to student, and from lesson to lesson, but two main concerns for me are: 1) ensuring the student feels challenged and stimulated enough to WANT to practise and enjoy the music, and 2) ensuring that the technical groundwork has been laid to be able to enjoy playing. I prepare students for ABRSM exams in both piano and music theory, but only at their choice. As a member of EPTA, students may also benefit, should they wish, from performance opportunities offered in workshops, festivals and concerts put on by the organisation. I only teach at my home and prefer to teach students in person. However, as a result of the recent pandemic, I do also offer remote lessons online. Student testimonials can be found on my external website.
