Personal Description:

I work as a professional orchestral musician, having so far played with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Opera, Opera North and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. I live in Glasgow, where I've been since doing my master's degree in clarinet performance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Before that, I spent four years at the University of Oxford earning a master's degree in physics.

I enjoy teaching in my spare time because it provides a great outlet for me to show my own enthusiasm and pass on my own experience to others. I strongly believe that education is the absolute root of everything our society is built upon, and I find it very worthwhile and rewarding to teach.

I usually spend any other free time practising amateur clockmaking, cooking, reading/watching science fiction, and drinking a lot of tea.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught clarinet to a number of students, ranging from beginners to grade 8. Lately I have done some work for Portobello Music School in Edinburgh, taking individual and small group lessons.
I also teach A-level and Highers physics and I find having these two completely separate types of teaching - allowing each to draw from the other - can be a real eye-opener for improving on my own teaching techniques.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to music tuition is based around the classic format of regular lessons (perhaps weekly or fortnightly, say) in which we work on a piece, study, scales etc that I'll have asked the student to practise after the previous lesson. I'm all in favour of student-led learning, and if there's specific music or techniques that the student has a real fascination or enthusiasm for, then I'm more than happy to pursue that with them.

I'm happy to prepare students for ABRSM exams or similar if they want, or alternatively I'm equally happy to teach in a more holistic way without working to the structure of exams.
