Information About Simon - Haringey teacher

Personal Description:

Simon grew up in Wensleydale and started playing the trombone at the age of 9. Shortly after this he joined Hawes Silver Band and was soon inspired by his teacher, Gordon Watts, to transfer onto the bass trombone.
Simon attended Northallerton Music Centre for six years before auditioning for Junior Royal Northern College of Music where he studied with Richard Broomhead for two years. During this time Simon played with the North Yorkshire County Council’s Youth Big Band and Orchestra where he won the young composer’s competition three times. Since then he has been in the National Youth Orchestra (including a concert in the BBC Proms) and performed both on stage and in the pit band for five productions with the National Youth Music Theatre.
In 2018 Simon achieved a scholarship to Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he now studies classical Bass Trombone with David Stewart, Simon Wills and Eric Crees. As well as classical playing, Simon regularly performs with the Guildhall Jazz Ensembles and in his own chamber groups/bands.

Tutoring Experience:

Simon has given lessons to young and mature students in London and at his home in Wensleydale. Simon has also helped tenor trombonist learn to transfer there skills onto the bass and helped a range of players develop their technical ability further.

Tutoring Approach:

Simon believes that when it comes to teaching there are many different approaches that achieve the same result. He is a keen believer that musicality should be taught with the same precedence as technique from the start to build a well rounded musician.
