Personal Description:

I am an active performing musician, tutor, and music scholar who has recently relocated to Bristol. Having graduated with first class honours in music from Edinburgh University, I obtained my PhD in music, specialising in the drum kit.

As a performer, my drumming has featured on BBC Radio 2, 3, & 4, as well as many local radio stations. I am signed to RareNoise Records in London, and have toured internationally throughout North & South America, China, and throughout Europe, as well as performing at many UK festivals (Glastonbury, Bestival, Wilderness, Boomtown, etc.).

My practical experience has come from many diverse projects, and different musical styles, including rock/metal, latin, jazz & blues. I bring my practical experience to my teaching, helping my students to become versatile musicians.

Tutoring Experience:

I have eight years teaching experience with one-to-one tuition of all abilities. During my time as a PhD student I have lectured & tutored in music at The University of Edinburgh & Bristol, and in 2016 was nominated for, and won the Edinburgh Teaching Awards (`Best Student Who Teaches`). One of my students who nominated me wrote:
"Paul is always keen to help and provides detailed, high-quality answers, taking no shortcuts and always working hard to ensure we understand the material. He creates a positive atmosphere in all his tutorials. I truly feel Paul has been a source of inspiration".

I strive to teach my students not only to become talented drummers, but talented musicians. This means a grounding in music theory relevant to the working drummer. Sheet music is provided, and though it may not be used in day-to-day gigging, provides a useful teaching tool and adds another skill set. I am well-versed in many drumming styles, and take an interest in the student`s own musical tastes, often using this as a point of reference and a source of musical examples to learn from.

I was the recipient of The Edinburgh University Teaching Awards in 2016.
