Personal Description:

I am a very experienced qualified accordion teacher and performer with over 35 years in the profession. I have played with many bands and with orchestras such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Opera North, the Halle and the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Proms. I have a worked a lot in the theatre as a musician, composer, musical director and actor. This has been in large productions (e.g. Sheffield Crucible), in rural touring (e.g. Farnham Maltings), on Radio 3 and theatre in education. I studied the accordion with Ivor Beynon and Prof. Owen Murray.

Tutoring Experience:

Apart from teaching button accordion, piano accordion, standard and free bass accordion privately, I have also taught these instruments at Leeds College of Music, Leeds Metropolitan University, Chetham's School of Music (Manchester), Ampleforth College and Rishworth School near Halifax. I have also taught accordion at summer schools (Avril Dankworth Music Camp) and general music lectures for the British College of Accordionist. I also have several years experience of working with disabled students in teaching and music therapy sessions.

Tutoring Approach:

I treat every student as an individual and tailor lessons around their musical interests. Everyone has unique strengths and weaknesses and I adapt material or create it specially for each pupil. I try to teach in such a way that students learn how to overcome problems themselves so becoming less reliant on me as the teacher. Most of all I try to make learning enjoyable and meaningful.
