Personal Description:

Hi! I'm Matthew, a flute player and educator based in Manchester. I have just completed my studies at the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music (studying on the prestigious joint course) and achieved the highest classifications in both my MusB (Hons) and GRNCM Diploma. I now work at Chetham's School of Music both as a House Assistant, working directly with young people from Y3-Y8 in a pastoral role, and as a Practice Administrator. I will also soon be providing weekend tuition for Trafford Music Service.

With recent projects including a brand new commission for Alto Flute and Dance, a performance at Bridgewater Hall with the RNCM Symphony Orchestra and an appearance at Wigmore Hall, I am an active performer with specific interests in contemporary flute repertoire. I have been kindly supported by both the trustees of the Stoller Trust, as well as the Oldham Music Service throughout my studies.

Tutoring Experience:

I have a strong drive to deliver on his passions for music education access, and I'm currently achieving this through my roles as a volunteer for the National Orchestra for All and as a melody tutor with the local youth music samba fusion project 'Jubacana'. I currently privately teach 2 young beginner students online, whom I have continued with for the last 2 years (ever since their very first note), 1 young beginner student in-person, 1 adult beginner in-person, and 1 adult beginner online. I have just completed my 2nd year as the UK's ambassador for The World Ensemble, engaging with El Sistema-inspired projects across the globe, developing brand new, online projects, and writing articles about my work with a variety of outreach projects.

Tutoring Approach:

As a flute teacher, my primary focus is to work with students to develop the fundamentals necessary to have longevity in their experience of playing the flute: ensuring that the body is in congruence with the instrument, that the music being played is engaging and challenging, and that their sense of creativity is allowed to flourish through improvisation, composition, and creative input. And as a teacher of music theory, my priority is to make sure what is being taught is relevant, engaging and dynamic.
