Information About Luke - Lewisham teacher

Personal Description:

My name is Luke and I am a 22 year old, award-winning guitarist from Greenwich, London.
I am an experienced and enthusiastic teacher and am adept at all varieties of guitar playing, including, classical, acoustic, electric and bass.

I am currently studying for a Master's in guitar performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and also play in different rock-oriented groups that have toured around the UK. I am currently being taught by Graham Devine and have taken part in and attended masterclasses by David Russell, Roberto Aussell, Craig Ogden and many others.

As a performer, besides earning my first-degree honours, I have been able to explore many different avenues since starting my studies. I frequently perform and record as a solo artist, in chamber ensembles and in contemporary rock and pop groups and have specific interests in Spanish, Latin music and in re-recording old and potentially forgotten music.
I was recently honoured to perform at the Royal Greenwich Guitar Festival and before that won the prestigious Allison Stephens prize for plucked strings.

My ambition is to discover useful and creative ways of teaching people the guitar and to teach at the highest level I can. I have been very lucky to have had many fine teachers over my education and I hope I can inspire my students in the same way my teachers inspired me.

Tutoring Experience:

Regarding my previous experience in tutoring, I have given many hours of private guitar tuition during my years of study but am now looking to start forming a career for myself in music education. I have also spent time tutoring A-level students for exams. These experiences have given me a keen sense of how to motivate students and offer them concise and useful advice.

I have spent time working for tutoring with my universities' junior department, in local primary school and at the Blackheath Conservatoire. I was also pleased to begin teaching with the Canada Blanch Music Academy.

Tutoring Approach:

I have found over my experiences of being taught and then eventually teaching that the best method for getting the most out of a student is to listen. If the tutor is acutely aware of where their student needs help and where they are already confidant they can tailor classes carefully to make the best use of the time allowed and to get the maximum potential out of them. This philosophy leads to classes being student-oriented, in that they lead the tuition. The tutor acts as a supportive crutch, first working through problems together, then allowing them to explore it themselves with the tutor to lean back on.

In my first years of training, like many others, I completed grades and that is how my teachers and I measured my progress. Because of this I have a very good knowledge of what it takes to move up this system. However, the grade system should not be seen as the only way to learn an instrument. The same achievement can be gained through simple discussion between student and teacher and the correct prescription of pieces and studies to work on. I am more than happy to walk down whatever avenue they wish to explore.
